1. There were 22 children registered in 2012 ranging in age from 4 to 13 years old (11 girls and 11 boys) and 19 attended the May activity day. There were 8 new gardeners and 14 returning gardeners.

The Silent Auction of Special Plant divisions will be held at our September meeting. Please consider what “special” plant you might be able to pot up and donate for this special evening. We are looking for good sized named plants that are not normally donated to our spring sale. Shrubs, hostas , heucheras, coneflowers, day lilies are a few examples.

John carries a huge variety of plant material. It is definitely worth a visit to his gardens. In the week following this presentation, a daytrip is being organized to visit his gardens.

On Site Visit We have been invited to visit the market and personal gardens of Paula Anderson, from Peterborough Green Up. At our February meeting, Paula introduced us to permaculture as related to improving the vegetables and fruits grown in our gardens. This on-site tour will give us a chance to see how Paula puts her teachings to practical use.
Members will meet at Trinity United Church at 6:15 p.m. to carpool. Directions will be sent out in the May newsletter for those who wish to meet us at the site.

Malcolm McDonald grows dahlias because he enjoys them. He will share photos of some of his favourite varieties, and well as offer tips on successfully growing the plants and caring for and storing the roots over winter. He will also show you how to divide the roots to start new plants.

This year our Silent Auction will be part of the May Flower Show. We will be asking members for donations of garden related or interesting items that we can auction. Both new and gently used items are welcomed. For those creative crafty members, we welcome your donations of hand made items as well.

Don’t forget to start planning for our 2012 plant sale now! As you plant you seeds, or make your cuttings – please do a few extra for the sale. As you plan your garden renovations for the upcoming year, think about which perennials will need dividing. Put them into pots and keep them for our sale, or contact a member of the group and someone will pick them up. We need your plants!

Paula Anderson, our speaker for February will speak about urban growing of veggies today, both on a small and a large piece of property, including some tried and true varieties, heritage and new varieties. She will also touch on permaculture in relationship to your property.
