Cauleen Viscoff: I’m a reformed rose killer.
…but I’m also an award-winning artist and gardener, a veteran rose grower, author & Master Gardener; so you’d think I’d have figured out how to prune roses.
But in reality, my compost heap enjoyed more roses than my garden.
I had to figure it out for myself.
Rose books are full of glorious photos with a few fuzzy ones attempting to show how to prune them.
And the videos? Oh my… fast and furious with much mumbling, bees humming and the creaking of old leather gloves amid clipping noises; all drowned out by birdsong. Most distressing of all? The experts kept contradicting one another. I was so frustrated and I wasn’t alone.
It took me a few long snowy winters inside and some experimental summers out in the garden to figure it all out.
I dissected the videos and all that text and then sketched each step so I could actually understand what the experts wanted us to know. This way I could see exactly what all that clipping was about and thought if it answered my questions, it might answer some of yours, so I hope sharing it with you takes some of the mystery out of it.
